Dominic Florence
Teaching
According to Dominic, teaching is a great source for his own inspiration.
Hearing pianists perform for him and then discussing ideas through
demonstration and dialogue will often elucidate meaning for both the
teacher and student.
He understands the unusual connection that should exist between a
teacher and student; including the corollary that not every master is
suited for every pupil. As such, it may be mentioned here that not
everyone will benefit from Dominic's teaching. Students of his must
have their own internal impetus for hard work and be able to reasonably
defend their ideas; equally they must be ready to question any concept
given to them from any origin.
Dominic has taught piano and theory at all levels for more than ten
years; privately, as a studio TA at UBC, and as an informal coach for
anyone who wishes to learn.
As of Fall 2007, Dominic is working in conjunction with the Aeolian
School of Music in London, Canada. It is essentially a new conservatory
that will be experiencing rapid growth in the near future. Dominic will
be a part of this exciting venture through teaching, lectures and
masterclasses. For more information or to arrange a lesson, please
