Dominic Florence
Bach Keyboard Sessions
The germination of the Bach Keyboard Sessions began with a
disappointing discovery. Dominic could not find a single Bach festival
that supported the use of a modern piano. His views on performance
practice are documented elsewhere, and will not be argued here. Since
festival organizers felt Dr. Florence had nothing to contribute to the
music of Bach, Dominic wanted to start his own festival.
However, a single annual festival did not really match his ideas.
Dominic wanted these events to occur at different locations several
times a year to facilitate the exposure of his teaching to many
students. The sessions may include lectures, recitals or masterclasses.
Currently, Dominic is the sole presenter.
Dr. Florence wishes it to be known that the Bach Keyboard Sessions are
not just about Bach and his music. They encompass a much deeper ideal
-- passionate performance through thoughtful reflection.
Something may be said here about Dominic's performance of Bach. He
restricts himself to only two paragons: fidelity to the score and pure
expression of the self. He is regularly accused of being too "Romantic"
as well as the opposite sentiment of being too cold and unfeeling.
Also, some may accuse him of imitating Glenn Gould. He holds Gould in
the highest esteem, but people should know that Dominic finds imitation
to be one of the most abhorrent problems facing music today, and he
would scoff at any such intimation.
You may find the next scheduled Bach Keyboard Session on this page, as
long as I have had enough advance notice. Also, you may find other concerts
occasionally listed on the Concerts
page.
