BACH KEYBOARD SESSIONS

The germination of the Bach Keyboard Sessions occurred with a disappointing discovery. I could not find a single Bach festival that supported the use of a modern piano. My views on performance practice are documented elsewhere, and will not be argued here.  The more important issue is that festival organizers feel I have nothing to contribute to the music of Bach.

Instead of yearly festivals, I wanted to take a more flexible approach. The Bach Keyboard Sessions can exist as recitals, lectures, masterclasses or even an evening of discussion. The music of Bach does not even need to be the actual topic of discourse, but instead it can serve as a basis for a range of dialogues: passion and objectivity, tradition and reaction, method and instinct, etc. It is not a stage for my own ideals to be put forth, but rather an occasion for all unique approaches to interpretation to be shared.

Thus far, these events have been small in scale, and generally only recognized internally by my overall scheme. The versatility of the Bach Keyboard Sessions allows them to take on almost any form, and I would enjoy seeing them grow into more frequent meetings of minds. Rather than just a lecture or masterclass given by me, hopefully future sessions will involve many other inquisitive artists.
